METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' Lands On Irish Chart
September 14, 2008METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", has entered the Irish national chart at position No. 3 for the week ending Thursday, September 11.
Even though "Death Magnetic" was officially released worldwide this past Friday, September 12, a couple of the Irish retailers reportedly started selling the CD early — on Wednesday, September 10 — after the record was leaked online the week before.
The new 10-song collection is the band's first since 2003, when it issued the controversial "St. Anger". Many fans were turned off by that record's primitive production and lack of guitar solos, but drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio that doing "St. Anger" paved the way to return to a more traditional sound on "Death Magnetic". "I'm pretty sure that a big part of the reason the new record sounds and feels like it does is because we had to go and do that in order to get to where we are now. You know what I mean?" he said. "We had to get that out of our systems. It was just, it was vital, it was unavoidable. We had to just fuck it up to that point."
"Death Magnetic" was produced by the band and Rick Rubin, known for his work with the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, JOHNNY CASH and many others.
The album marks the recording debut of bassist Robert Trujillo, who joined METALLICA in 2003 shortly after "St. Anger" was completed.
All the tracks on "Death Magnetic", including a special "extended" version of the song "Suicide and Redemption", are available simultaneously for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour, which is coming out this October.
METALLICA will kick off its indoor North American tour on October 21 in Glendale, Arizona, with shows booked through the end of January.
